AKP, Sendikacılık ve Siyaset

During AKP rule, trade unionism in Turkey was forced to transform, caught between neoliberalism and conservatism. This book examines the government's interventions in the sphere of labor and the position of the trade union movement in this process, while discussing what kind of trade unionism is needed for social justice and a strong labor struggle.

Mine Dilan Kıran’s book is an original study that offers a systematic account of the relationship between trade unions and politics in Turkey over the past twenty years. It interprets this relationship through the twin concepts of “neoliberalism and conservative democracy,” examining its different dimensions and showing how, through legislation and other practices, the government established an authoritarian regime of tutelage and control over the world of labor. The study examines both the restriction of trade union rights through state intervention and the strengthening of union organizations close to the government, as well as unions’ responses to these developments. I believe Kıran’s book will help readers understand not only working life but also developments in other spheres during this period.
Professor Ahmet Makal

Studying trade unionism in a particular historical period requires, first of all, identifying the spirit of that period. Yet this is not enough: one must establish it through scholarly criteria and, without submitting to it, recall the universal principles of trade unionism in the process under examination. Mine Dilan Kıran has succeeded with great competence in studying workers’ trade unionism during the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), 2002–2023, while making the spirit of the times visible. The study presents the dominant outlook of the period through the concepts of “neoliberalism” and “conservative democracy,” also considering their historical development. The relationship between neoliberalism, conservatism and trade unionism finds its most concise expression in the heading “Trade Unionism in the Grip of Neoliberalism and Conservatism.” The emphasis on “in the grip” offers a powerful framework for explaining how these two approaches shaped trade unionism. The study thus shows to what extent trade unionism shaped by neoliberalism and conservatism accords with the universal principles historically developed by the union movement in its struggle for existence, and answers the question of what kind of trade unionism is needed to achieve social justice.
