Bread and Roses

A young Mexican woman, Maya, arrives in the U.S. illegally. After working as a waitress in a bar for a while, she gets a job as a cleaner in a large office building with the help of her sister. Soon, Maya meets Sam, a union activist who urges her to face the truth and realize that the company is exploiting them by paying poverty-level wages. "Bread and Roses"—a slogan of 10,000 immigrant workers, mostly women, who stood up against starvation wages in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1912—remains as relevant as ever.
