The film was made with the financial support of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the German Transport Workers' Union (DTV). It tells the tale of the dockworkers' strike that was lost in Hamburg in the winter of 1896-1897. One of the central storylines features the relationship between two brothers, a worker and a policeman, who end up on opposing sides of the barricades. Some of the details from that era are striking. For instance, a workers' meeting voting for a strike, held under the peaceful watch of two police officers. The silent film.
