Captain Boycott

This historical drama is centered on one of the most prominent episodes in the struggle of Irish tenant farmers against English landlords at the end of the 19th century, who had seized all the best land in Ireland. Led by Hugh Devin, a farmer, and Father McKeogh, a priest, the farmers organize a campaign against the pompous Captain Charles Boycott, the manager of Lord Erne’s estate. Scene by scene, the story unfolds into an iconic chapter in proletarian struggle, giving rise to the term “boycott.” The film also features a romantic subplot, is filled with Irish wit, and was a major box office success when it was released in 1947.
