Salvatore Vento's historical-sociological research analyzes the crisis in labor relations in the 1980s through a careful reconstruction of the key events that characterized it, particularly in Genoa, Turin, and Milan: the solidarity fund, the 1983 Scotti agreement, the dramatic division of 1984, and the referendum on the sliding wage scale. This central phase of the research is preceded by an analysis of the experience of national solidarity (the historic compromise, union decisions in the EUR district) and concludes with the concertation agreements of 1992-1993. Two different political visions confronted each other: that of Pierre Carniti, who advocated for a union as an autonomous political entity, and that of Enrico Berlinguer, who prioritized his party's action as the representative of the working class.
