Casas viejas 1933 / Old houses 1933
On January 8, 1933, a general strike was declared throughout Spain. The strike was quickly suppressed, except in Casas Viejas, a small village in Cádiz. During the repression, state security forces murdered 22 peasants in cold blood, including women and children. Most of the victims had nothing to do with the events. The scandal shook the foundations of the Second Republic and brought down the government of Manuel Azaña. The documentary Casas Viejas 1933 analyzes the tragedy from the perspective of the people of Casas Viejas and pays tribute to the true protagonists of this story: the victims.
