Celuloza

Jerzy Kawalerowicz 1954 Poland
A black-and-white drama in the style of socialist realism, set in bourgeois Poland of the 1920s. A rural boy, Szczęsny, tries various jobs to help his family escape poverty, but his efforts are in vain. Eventually, he concludes that joining the underground Communist Party is the only way forward. The most intriguing part of the story is when Szczęsny and his father join a strikebreaking "Christian" union, which focuses on undercutting wages and taking jobs away from striking workers.
