Daens

Father Adolf Dans, a Catholic priest, comes to the textile town of Aalst. Here, child labor is widespread, working conditions are awful, the pay is meager, the poor have no voice, and the church stands with the bourgeoisie. Father Dans writes articles for a Catholic newspaper about the plight of workers, which soon provokes them into action. Dans is expelled from the Catholic party and joins the Christian Democrats and is elected to parliament. Ultimately, he faces a decision in life between two callings: a clergyman or a labor leader.
