Değişen Sinema Değişen Seyirci: Film Festivalleri ve Alternatif Arayışlar
The book on film festivals, Changing Cinema, Changing Audiences: Film Festivals and the Search for Alternatives, is now available.
On the tenth anniversary of the Workers’ Film Festival, Workers’ Films and Other “Cinemas” was published under the editorship of Funda Başaran. For the festival’s twentieth anniversary, Changing Cinema, Changing Audiences: Film Festivals and the Search for Alternatives has appeared, edited by Önder Özdemir.
Since the 2000s, innovations in cinema technology have changed movie theaters and film-viewing habits. This book traces these changes in cinema and its audiences. Its contributors examine different aspects of film festivals in Turkey and around the world. Independent festivals distinguish themselves from festivals that replicate one another and operate with the support of major capital groups. Unlike festivals receiving state support and corporate sponsorship, and therefore sometimes applying self-censorship to their selections, they aim to provide an independent and free platform. The Workers’ Film Festival is not alone in this endeavor. Festivals such as the Bozcaada International Festival of Ecological Documentary (BIFED), Documentarist Istanbul Documentary Days, Which Human Rights? Film Festival, and Pink Life QueerFest also need to be seen, screened, introduced, and brought to wider audiences. This book was also prepared for that purpose. The essays examine different aspects of festivals in Turkey and around the world, emphasizing independent festivals, independent cinemas, and the search for alternatives.
We hope this book will help make better known those festivals that remain little known, unseen, and unscreened, and do not represent the film industry, filling an important gap.
