En guerre et en grève. Enquêtes dans les cités minières britanniques. / At War and on Strike . Investigations in British Mining Towns (1939-1945)

Ariane Mak 2025 West Europe
Based on her doctoral thesis defended in 2018, historian Ariane Mak's book, *At War and on Strike* , challenges the notion that "there were no strikes during the war!" (p. 9). However, as the author points out, between 1940 and 1944, 7,455 strikes were recorded in Great Britain, with the mining industry at the forefront. This discourse of national unity also associated strikers with antipatriotism and found support within the government, in the press, and later in official memoirs. It is precisely against these received ideas of a suspension of social conflicts or of the antipatriotism of British strikers that Ariane Mak constructs her argument.
