In the Valley of the Kings – the legendary burial place of the pharaohs – there was not only death. There was also life. Adjacent to the valley was the village of Deir el-Medina, and there lived all the stonemasons, painters, scribes and other professionals needed to build the incomparable tombs. Here we meet them and their families, three thousand years later, but in such close-up that the distance is easily forgotten. The desert sands have preserved not only their houses, chapels and their own graves, but also an astonishing number of their accounts, minutes, letters and private notes. Thanks to the documents, Sofia Häggman can recreate the lives of the villagers – during feast days, in court, in the kitchen or deep down in the tombs – and thereby provide many interesting pieces of information about life and death in ancient Egypt
