A ordinary working-class immigrant Johnny Kovak from Cleveland rises to the leadership of a powerful truck drivers' union, fighting for a better life for himself and his fellow workers. In its struggle against the bosses, the union relies on the support of the mafia. Ultimately, Kovak's endeavor to rid himself of the gangsters' tight control ends in his tragic demise.
