Gli scioperi del '43-'44 / The Strikes of '43-'44. Activists and Militants from Anti-Fascism to Liberation
The strikes of 1943-44 were the largest strikes ever seen in Europe, and proved decisive in catalyzing forces against the regime during the most difficult years of the war. This volume is a valuable contribution to the historiography of the Resistance. It brings together numerous essays on various Italian contexts, with important European forays into French and Belgian anti-fascist circles, which provide insight into hundreds of virtually unknown figures: trade unionists, anti-fascists, and militants, who operated clandestinely not only in "Women's Defense Groups" but also in smaller groups, if not alone. This invaluable wealth of information and analysis reveals a vast network of female resistance and is the fruit of a major conference organized by Tamara Ferretti, president of the ANPI Women's Coordination Committee, in 2024 at the Casa della Memoria in Milan: The Strikes of 1943-44. Women Protagonists of Freedom and collects the documented interventions on that occasion by historians as well as the testimonies of partisans Mirella Alloisio and Sandra Girardelli.
