Published in 1941 as a continuation of Statarna, this collection depicts Sweden’s agricultural workers. The publisher highlights the contrast between dependent farm labourers and independent-minded railway workers, who mock local authority. Lo-Johansson combined social criticism with literary storytelling; his portrayals contributed to the abolition of the statar system in 1945.
