Les finances du syndicalisme / The Finances of Trade Unionism

Emilien Julliard 2026 West Europe
Since the 1980s, trade unions in France have faced a paradoxical situation: their membership plummeted at the very moment the government guaranteed them unprecedented financial support. Since then, the image of unions living off the state has become widespread. From transparency policies aimed at uncovering union resources to the resurgence of strike funds, and the growing role of businesses in financing social dialogue, current events paint a more complex picture. This book sheds light on the diverse sources of union funding by examining, in turn, the money circulating through public and semi-public mechanisms, the money distributed within companies, and the activist funds that directly connect unions to individuals. In doing so, it seeks to understand how these funding methods operate, what unions do with them, and what they do in return.
