Lotta senza classe (A Classless Struggle)

Greca Campus 2014 Italy
Three different ways of being metalworkers. Three different ways of dealing with the crisis, three different life prospects. Through the words and experiences of three main characters (Stefano, a full-time Fiom trade-unionist delegate; Alessandro, a jazz trumpet player who makes a living at the steel plant; and Krishna, an Indian migrant working for a subcontractor), the documentary explores the crisis of the historic Terni steelworks, the loss of class identity, and the struggle for employment. The film shows that even though classes and large political parties no longer exist, social inequalities still remain and even increase. Terni shares the same fate as Piombino, Taranto, and Termini Imerese - territories whose identity remains tied to the factory, the sole reference point in the absence of alternatives. A film about contradictions, migrations, and the persistence of workers' cultural identity.
