Former Chairman Jeong joined the mold department of Hyundai Motor Company in 1984, went on a hunger strike to protest dismissal in 1988, was arrested in 1992 for his struggle for profit distribution, led the self-immolation protest in memory of martyr Yang Bong-su in 1995, served as the 6th chairman of the Hyundai Motor Company labor union in 1995, lost in the election for the chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions in 1998, participated in a 34-day chimney protest against layoffs in 1998, served as the 8th chairman of the Hyundai Motor Company labor union in 1999, lost in the 2005 Ulsan Buk-gu by-election as a member of the National Assembly, served as the chairman of the Metal Workers' Union in 2007, was arrested in 2008 for his struggle against the Korea-US FTA, was arrested in 2009 for his struggle against the Ssangyong Motor Company layoffs, and retired in 2018. This book is a memoir of "Worker Jeong Gap-deuk," a former Hyundai Motor Company mold maker who entered the labor movement and became a leading figure in its struggles. It intersects with the history of the democratic labor movement, which began with the July-September 1987 labor struggle and led to the formation of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the Korean Metal Workers' Union.
