Murdered Coca-Cola Unionists in Colombia / Ermordete Coca-Cola-Gewerkschafter

Bärbel Schönafinger 2004 Germany Documentary
Every year, trade unionists are murdered in Colombia. Corporations such as Coca-Cola and Nestlé play an important role in this. To show the connections between these corporations, paramilitaries and the Colombian state, we thoroughly researched one case: on 5 December 1996, Isidro Gil was shot by paramilitaries at the Coca-Cola bottling plant “Bebidas Y Alimentos de Urabá”. The paramilitaries then forced the entire workforce to leave the union. Today, the union no longer exists in this completely paramilitarized region, while the murderers remain free.

The film reconstructs the case in detail and places it within the recent political history of Urabá in northern Colombia, where between 1995 and 1998 a successful left-wing party, all social movements and the trade unions were literally wiped out.
