The Paşabahçe strike of 1966 was a workers’ action that formed enduring tendencies and traditions and holds a special place both in the history of glassworkers and Kristal-İş, and in the broader history of the Turkish working class. With this book, we have sought to bring to light as many aspects of this historic strike as possible. Alongside lesser-known dimensions of the Paşabahçe 1966 strike, we also examine incomplete and erroneous interpretations that appear in the labor history literature concerning the strike. Contrary to widespread belief, the main significance of the Paşabahçe 1966 strike does not lie in its impact on the founding of DİSK; our research shows that this influence was extremely limited. The true importance of the 1966 strike lies in the fact that it created a tradition and gave birth to a trade union—bringing Kristal-İş into existence. This book is the story of the emergence of a tradition and a union.
