Archam Alie, a university student, sets out to study firsthand how a coal mining company operates. When the company’s management rejects these demands, Archam and his comrades are violently suppressed: their meeting place is raided by the camp police, and Archam is arrested and imprisoned. That same night, a massive explosion erupts in Mine Number One, killing hundreds of miners. The company’s response reveals its priorities: protecting property over human lives. Archam manages to persuade Jens, the son of the “Coal Maharaja” of the Parau Valley, to authorize the reopening of the mine for rescue operations. But the company’s slow and half-hearted response only deepens workers’ anger. As grief turns into resistance, the miners call for a strike—and the camp erupts into open struggle.
