Strajk. Historia buntów pracowniczych

More than 150 years have passed since the first strike, which took place in 1872 at the Cegielski factory—a symbol and an exceptional site not only on the map of Greater Poland but of the entire country. The Poznań enterprise, which has operated continuously for 178 years, serves for Jarosław Urbański as a point of reference and inspiration for describing the dynamics of the workers’ movement and class conflicts. The author addresses, among other things, the previously unexplored topic of the first women’s trade union organizations and recalls the figures of the most famous female rally speakers. From the history of Cegielski, he moves to the Polish shipyards inextricably linked with the factory, and in the finale he brings to mind the profile of the legendary trade union activist Marcel Szary. He shows how workers’ struggles have found contemporary continuation in the Workers’ Initiative, which is actively organizing among employees in Amazon warehouses in Sadach near Poznań.
