Svárovská stávka

Marie Karausová 1980 East-Central Europe
The book describes a workers’ strike at the Johann Liebieg textile factory in 1870 in Svárov, in Velké Hamry in the Jablonec region. The strike was brutally suppressed by gendarmes and soldiers, and seven people lost their lives. The account of the course of the Svárov strike is preceded by a brief history of Baron Liebieg’s business activities and information on the working conditions and wages of the workers. The author introduces the causes that led to the strike, traces its course, its consequences, and the reactions to the events in Svárov among workers in Bohemia, and also assesses the significance of the strike for the further development of the labor movement in the Czech lands.
