The story begins in Bengal, 1975. Workers at a jute factory in Kolkata are ruthlessly exploited, and attempts at protest are swiftly suppressed. The union leader, Yadunath, is falsely accused of murdering the factory owner's brother and is sentenced to hang. Before his execution, he bequeaths his eyes for transplantation to a blind worker.
