The Price of Coal (Play for Today)

Ken Loach 1977 UK
A two-part drama about miners in the fictional town of Milton Colliery in South Yorkshire. Part One: The Price of Coal: Meet the People focuses on the town’s preparations for an upcoming visit by Prince Charles. The mine administration rushes to install temporary toilets, paint over broken bricks, and so on, while persuading the workers to "mind their language" in the presence of the royal guest. The workers, however, react with barely concealed sarcasm and even mock the situation. Part Two: The Price of Coal: Back to Reality depicts the aftermath of a mine disaster and the efforts to rescue the trapped workers.
