The Stars Look Down

The story is set in a dark mining town in northern England, where Robert and Martha Fenwick give up everything to provide their son David a chance at a better life and a university education.a chance at a better life and a university education. Robert works at the mine alongside his younger son and attempts to organize the rest of the miners. After a failed love, David commits all his time to the cause of the miners, who had to return to work after an unsuccessful strike. Hoping to become a member of parliament, he seeks support from the union but fails. Following the mine collapse, in which many, including his father and younger brother, die, David chooses to remain in the town and devote his life to improving the lives of the miners.
