The years of revolution and counter-revolution in Chile sparked identifications, passions, and mobilizations on a global scale, becoming a powerful cause with diverse uses and meanings: from an emblem of militant solidarity and a source of political “lessons” to a driving force behind the emerging language of Human Rights, and—for some—a potent symbol of an authoritarian and radical anti-communism. This book brings together academics from different national backgrounds to study the global impact of the Chilean 1970s and explores the reasons, dynamics, and consequences of this phenomenon. Why did Chile become a global political symbol? How was the Chilean experience interpreted in other parts of the world? Who mobilized for Chile, and why?
