March 1, 1944: General strike of the Italian working class. In the preceding months, regular and widespread work stoppages had already affected the Veneto and Northern Italy, where the workforce, hostile to forced relocation and weakened by working conditions and food shortages, thus staged a veritable form of resistance to the German occupation. In Veneto, work stoppages occurred almost everywhere, with varying motivations and methods in various cities and industrial centers: while in the Padua area and in the factories of Marghera the protests were limited and ineffective, in the Vicenza area the work stoppages achieved significant results, particularly in Schio and Valdagno. "A Cause to Fight For" reconstructs the workers' experiences in these two industrial centers, starting from their history of opposition to the fascist regime, highlighting the active role of women in their respective episodes of worker resistance. It then retraces, in parallel, the events surrounding the Pellizzari factory strike of March 28, 1944, and its tragic outcome: the execution of four workers in Montecchio Maggiore Castle and the deportation of twenty-one others to Mauthausen. The appendix includes the testimony of Romeo de Marzi, who was involved in the Pellizzari affair, and the "Diary" of Giovanni Cracco, a forced laborer who left for Germany in May 1944, along with a substantial gallery of period images and documents.
