In every collective bargaining session, the labor world looks with admiration—and a certain undisguised envy—at the wage agreements reached by the oilseed workers' union with employers. Time and again, they manage to keep their salaries comfortably above the average for Argentine workers. But it hasn't always been this way. Until very recently—at the end of the last century—the same global giants of the grain trade, the richest of the rich, like Dreyfus or Cargill, paid their workers poverty wages, and the plants were unsafe places where workers were exposed to serious dangers. It took the emergence of a new generation of union leaders to reverse that situation. Its epicenter was Rosario, and from there it spread throughout the country like an unstoppable revolutionary wave. This leadership forged its path by fostering class consciousness and workers' democracy, and by championing the unwavering demand for dignified wages, as mandated by the Constitution.
