Robert Grimm (1881–1958), the organizer of the Zimmerwald Conference (1915) and the Kiental Conference (1916), as well as president of the strike committee during the Swiss general strike (1918), embarked on a journeyman's tour as a young printer's apprentice from 1900 to 1902. He kept a diary of his journey back to Switzerland. After months of work at the printing plant of the newspaper "Arbeiterwille" in Graz, he traveled mostly on foot via Ljubljana to Trieste and from there to Gorizia. He then hiked via Villach on the Drava River, Lienz, and South Tyrol, over the Ofen and Julier Passes, back to his birthplace of Wald in the Zurich Oberland. In his diary, he describes the joys and sorrows of a journeyman. We learn of his constant financial difficulties, which were only inadequately alleviated by the travel allowance provided by the trade union and occasionally forced him to beg. Bad weather and repeated police checks also made life difficult. He enjoyed the company on the road and in the workers' meeting places, and took pleasure in the beautiful landscapes. The book offers surprising insights into a traditional form of labor migration that was promoted equally by trade unions, businesses, and the government.
