Even in such a Korea, there was undoubtedly a time of labor activism. And paradoxically, it was a time when workers' rights were most brutally trampled. And the most ardent leaders who ushered in that era were the women workers of Dongil Textiles. The workers' vicious cry, "We didn't live off of shit," became a symbol of the era. Yet, after a fierce struggle against state power and capital, all they were left with was the social stigma of "dismissed workers" and "blacklisted." They fought and acted for decades to transform this stigma into "worker dignity and honor." The lives they lived were not mere reminiscence or recollection, but a reality. It was only when they cast aside the countless social gazes that imprisoned them that the true light of the labor movement truly began to shine.
