While the history of trade unionism and that of production cooperatives have been extensively explored, the history of their encounter remains to be written. This book explores the practices and perceptions that arise at their intersection, examining both the emergence of emancipatory possibilities and the difficulties encountered. Do production cooperatives eliminate wage-based subordination? What role can trade unionism play in defending workers in these companies? How does one position oneself as a trade unionist-cooperative member? Are cooperatives destined to replace unions in the pursuit of autonomy at work, or even to transcend the capitalist economy? How and why fight when one is both the manager and co-owner of one's own company? What contributions and difficulties arise from the encounter between trade unionism and cooperatives? What shared projects for emancipation exist? This book seeks to answer these questions through original contributions that blend a multidisciplinary academic perspective (sociologists, political scientists, historians) with the views of activists and cooperative actors. It opens a dialogue at the intersection of two historical institutions of the labor movement, exploring the practical possibilities of challenging the dominant order.
