Erik Turesson from Socialistisk Politik’s study committee reflects on how social movements can influence politics — and why simply being present in the streets is not enough. He points to climate protests as an example: if tens of thousands of people can turn out for a demonstration, then the movement also has the people and resources to build its own media, educational projects and lasting structures instead of waiting for attention from the mainstream press. His formula is simple: “do it yourselves.” The labour and left movements once built their own public sphere — and they can do it again.
